A pre symposium workshop on “Hand sewn and Stapler techniques in anastomosis for Esophageal cancer
1st JPMC Esophageal Cancer Conference
I had a swelling on my back for 3 years and it grew overtime to a huge size. I started feeling embarrassed to go and meet people so I visited various doctors. Some scared me of saying it is cancer whereas one of them referred me to thoracic surgeon. I came here, doctors examined me and ran some scans. They said it looks non-cancerous but has to be removed surgically and tested to be sure. I underwent a smooth surgery. Later, biopsy report was consistent with a non-cancerous mass made up of fatty tissue. I was relieved and grateful to the team here for their judgement and management.
I was brought to the hospital with an iron rod entering my chest from the back. I fell from the stairs at a construction site which resulted in this injury. I was afraid. The thoracic team tried their best to calm me down and immediately operated on me and removed the rod successfully. I was up and about in 3 days and was discharged from the hospital. With their efforts and dedication, I got another chance at life
I was diagnosed with tuberculosis two years ago for which I was prescribed medicines for 6months. Despite completing the course, I had multiple episodes of blood in cough. CT scan showed fungus in my lungs. I visited various doctors which suggested that it will be a high risk surgery. The thoracic surgeons here took my case and removed a lobe of my lungs which contained fungus. Their expertise and care guided me throughout this challenging journey, and I am glad to say that I am recovering well."
Father of the patient: "I brought my daughter here when she accidentally inhaled a scarf pin. The doctors here promptly got an X-ray which showed pin in the windpipe. They took her to the operation theatre immediately and removed the scarf pin with the help of a scope. I will be forever grateful to them for their quick response and treatment of my daughter.
I was stabbed in my chest and was brought here by few kind-hearted people. It was raining heavily but the thoracic team reached on time and passed a tube in my chest. As soon as they did that, there was a lot of blood coming out in the bottle. They hurriedly rushed me to the operation theatre. When I woke up next in ICU, I was told that there was an injury to my heart and some blood vessel which was repaired. I couldn't believe I survived it. It is because of these doctors that I am alive today.
I came from another city for treatment , the doctor there and in this city created panic and scared me that I have cancer and major surgery is required. I had a fruitful discussion with the thoracic team and they guided me that based on the CT scan, I have findings consistent with leiomyoma. It is a benign condition which can be removed without resection of the esophagus as the size is more than 8 cm. I underwent a smooth surgery with an excellent outcome and my biopsy was consistent with the diagnosis given by my doctor
I was diagnosed with cancer of the food pipe and had multiple sessions of chemo radiotherapy. I was referred to see a thoracic surgeon for surgery but was refused by few due to high risk because of comorbid conditions. The thoracic team here took my case, optimized and devised a surgical plan for me. I had a smooth surgery with three incisions and was discharged after 7 days. During my stay here, the team was vigilant and took good care of me. I can eat now from my mouth and would like to appreciate thoracic team efforts.
I was diagnosed with tuberculosis and was on treatment for 8months but my condition was getting worse. I developed pus in my chest for which a tube was passed in another city. I had that tube for 6 months but no doctor over there was ready to take it out or give an alternate treatment. it really affected my life. I came to Karachi and was seen by the team here. They did some tests and a CT scan and offered me a surgery called pleurocutaneous window. I agreed and underwent the procedure. I got rid of the tube finally. Though I am still on TB medications but will be thankful to the thoracic team for providing an alternative management option and removing the tube.
I had a surgery of windpipe in the year 2018 which resulted in complications and I ended up again with tracheostomy. I was devastated. My quality of life was badly affected with breathing difficulties and inability to speak. The thoracic team here took on the challenge to operate on me again. I underwent the procedure successfully and was discharged in a week. Now I do not have any breathing difficulty and can speak normally. The doctors here ended my misery and I will be always grateful to them.
